LAHORE: The University of Management and Technology (UMT) held a poetic symposium (Mushaira) on Wednesday to mark the 70th Independence Day.
Poet and literary icon Amjad Islam Amjad presided over the event.
The symposium featured recitals by noted poets such as Saima Kamran, Saud Usmani, Abbas Tabish, Hameeda Shaheen, Sajjad Baloch and Shaheen Firdous.
Speaking on the occasion, UMT Rector Dr Muhammad Aslam said that Pakistan came into being after paying a heavy price and sacrificing countless lives. He thanked the poets in attendance that took time out of their busy schedules and presented their select verses dealing with Pakistan’s history, national unity, Independence Day and the current political scenario.
“Poetry is sensation… it is essential to inspire and motivate others. The role of poets and literary figures in the struggle for Pakistan was critical. One of the founders of Pakistan, Muhammad Iqbal, was a poet and his verses ignited the flame of freedom in Muslims, shaking them out of slumber”, he said.
Earlier, UMT students presented a tabloid to represent country’s culture and national values. The event concluded with presentation of souvenirs to the guests.
